Installation Introduction

In order to track computers on the network for Pen/Thumb Drive activity, the
user will be required to install the Client Component of USB CopyNotify! on
those respective computers.
The computer on which the user will sit & actually do the monitoring will
require the Server Component of USB CopyNotify! to be installed.
It is also essential that while installing the CLIENT Component, the IP address
of machine or Machine Name where the Server Component is installed is specified
correctly.

Firewall Settings for USB CopyNotify!

In case there is a firewall installed on the machine, the following ports will
need to be opened :-
Port 40007 for UDP
Port 5555 for UDP
Port 5553 for TCP
Having these ports closed will result in incorrect functioning of the software.
Note:
Version 1.5 makes these setting automatically for the XP firewall but you will
need to make these settings manually for other firewalls.

Note:
The evaluation download is a fully functional build which expires on the 30th
day after the day the software was installed.
Server Install Instructions

This needs to be loaded on the computer that will alert you of USB Activity on
the Network
Double Click on USBCopyNotify!.exe to begin the installation.
Check the appropriate component for installation. (USB CopyNotify! Server).
The Install will automatically configure, load and start the Server Component of
USB CopyNotify! and can be seen in the System Tray.

It should be noted that the Server Component will be loaded every time
Windows starts.
Client Install Instructions

This needs to be loaded on the computer on the network that needs to be

Double Click the USBCopyNotify!.exe to begin the installation.
Check the appropriate component for installation. (USB CopyNotify! Client).
The user will then be prompted to enter the IP Address Or Machine Name of the
computer on which the Server Component of USB CopyNotify! has been installed.
In case you are loading the Client and Server Component on the same machine,
LOCALHOST can also be specified as the Machine Name.
After the Installation is complete the Client Component automatically loads
itself as a service. It should be noted that the Client Component will be loaded
every time Windows starts.
Security Tip : If the users have all administrative privileges on their
computers then attempts can be made by the user to kill or switch off the client
component thus rendering the monitoring of USB activity in-effective. The above
settings such as IP of the server, Blocking of the Port as well as the running
of the files can be changed if the user has administrative access. Hence in
order to counter the same, it is advised to remove administrative privileges for
users on computers that are being monitored for USB activity.

Now every time a USB device is inserted, it will automatically get blocked and a
notification of the same will be sent.

WhiteLists

You can decide to selectively allow the usage of USB Zip Drives on the basis
of user name / serial number on device / device make or manufacturer while
blocking the rest.
Whitelists can be created on each machine AFTER installation of the
USB CopyNotify Client by clicking on
Start/Programs/USB CopyNotify/USB CopyNotify! Configuration on the machine which
has the USB CopyNotify! client loaded.
Click on the White List Button as shown.

White Lists based on User Name
You can allow USB device access based on User Name by clicking on the 'User
Whitelist' TAB.

You will need to type out the names of the Users that will be allowed USB Zip
Drive usage and add them to the User Whitelist by clicking on the "Add to
Whitelist" button. You can remove a User from the whitelist by selecting the
user from the list and clicking on the "Remove from Whitelist" button.
Hence with this setting, after enabling the USB Block feature, only the users in
the whitelist will be allowed to access the device while the rest will be
blocked.
White Lists based on USB Zip Drive Serial Number

You can allow USB device access based on device serial number by clicking on the
'Device Whitelist' TAB.
You will need to first insert the USB Zip Drive that you wish to whitelist based
on its serial number. Once inserted, the serial number will automatically appear
in the 'Inserted Device Details Box'. You can then add these details to the
Whitelist of USB device serial numbers by clicking on the 'Add to whitelist'
button. You can remove a entry from the whitelist by selecting the entry from
the list and clicking on the "Remove from Whitelist" button.
Hence with this setting, after enabling 'USB Blocking', the user will be able to
access only the devices whose serial numbers appear in the Whitelist.
Note :
After inserting the device, it is highly recommended that you click on the
'Safely Remove Device' button before removing the device. These is a possibility
of corruption of data if volumes are not un mounted before removal of the
device.

Running a executable on receipt of an Alert

USB CopyNotify! allows you to specify the execution of an application based
on the receipt of a particular notification.
This setting can be made while installing the USB CopyNotify! client
OR
By Clicking on
'Start/Programs/USBCopyNotify!/USBCopyNotify! Configuration' after the USB
CopyNotify! client has been installed on the computer.
You first need to select the Alert as show in the figure below

You then need to select the PATH of file you which to RUN should the above
Alert be activated.
Click on BROWSE as shown in the figure below and select the file.
You can also type the path and file name is required.

After selecting the file, you can also add any parameters if required.

Now every time the selected Alert is activated, the file as specified by you
will be automatically executed with associated parameters if any.

Configuring the Save Energy Alert

Data Protection with Energy Conservation
The Save Energy Alert is sent every time the computer has been idle for a
specified period of time.
You can specify the System Idle time after which the Save Energy Alert will be
sent as shown in the figure below.

Sending
Offline Messages

The USB CopyNotify! client
can be configured such that it will log all USB
activity notifications locally if the USB
CopyNotify! Server is not available. Once the
USB CopyNotify! Server is found again it will
send notifications to the server indicating that
there was USB Activity on that client during the
span of time that the USB CopyNotify! Server was
not active.
You can also enable logging of offline messages while INSTALLING the USB CopyNotify! client
OR
By Clicking on
'Start/Programs/USBCopyNotify!/USBCopyNotify! Configuration' after the USB
CopyNotify! client has been installed on the computer.
Select 'Send Offline Message(s) as shown in the dialog box below.

Remotely Controlling USB Blocking of client machines

You can now remotely control the blocking of USB Devices from the USB CopyNotify!
Server. Care should be taken that the USB CopyNotify! client has already been
loaded on the remote machine.
Note:
In case there is a firewall installed on the machine, the following ports will
need to be opened BOTH on the USB CopyNotify! Client and Server machines:-
Port 40007 for UDP
Port 5555 for UDP
Port 5553 for TCP
Right Click on USB CopyNotify! Server System Tray Icon and select 'Client
Setting \ Block USB' as
shown in the figure below.
A dialog will appear as shown below

Specify the IP Address / Machine Name of the machine whose USB device usage you
wish to block or unblock.
Click on "Get Status" to get the current status of blocking of the remote
machine i.e. whether USB device usage is currently blocked or unblocked.
Accordingly the appropriate radio button in the "Block USB" section will
highlight the status.
Now click on Block / Unblock USB radio button as required and click on 'Apply'.
This action will now remotely set the blocking status on that machine.
Remotely Controlling Save Energy Settings of client computers

You can now remotely control the setting of the 'Client Settings \ Save Energy' time interval of a
remote computer from the USB CopyNotify! Server itself. Care should be taken
that the USB CopyNotify! client has already been loaded on the remote machine.
Note:
In case there is a firewall installed on the machine, the following ports will
need to be opened BOTH on the USB CopyNotify! Client and Server machines:-
Port 40007 for UDP
Port 5555 for UDP
Port 5553 for TCP
Right Click on USB CopyNotify! Server System Tray Icon and select 'Save Energy'

Specify the IP Address / Machine Name of the machine whose 'Save Energy'
interval time you wish to change. Click on "Get" to get the current 'Save
Energy' interval settings of that remote machine.
Clicking on Get will display the current settings. Now you can change the
settings as required and click on 'Apply' and the settings as specified will
reflected accordingly on that remote machine.
Remotely Controlling Whitelists of client computers

You can now remotely control the whitelist settings of client computers from the
USB CopyNotify! Server itself.
Note:
You will need to install a USB CopyNotify! client also on the SAME machine which
has USB CopyNotify! Server installed in order to remotely control whitelists.
The USB CopyNotify! client Server IP address should be LOCALHOST or the IP
address of the same machine so that it can communicate correctly with USB
CopyNotify! Server.
Note:
In case there is a firewall installed on the machine, the following ports will
need to be opened BOTH on the USB CopyNotify! Client and Server machines:-
Port 40007 for UDP
Port 5555 for UDP
Port 5553 for TCP
Right Click on USB CopyNotify! Server System Tray Icon and select 'Client
Settings \ Block USB'.
This will open the block USB dialog box.
Click on the "White List" button that appears on the right hand side.

In the White List dialog, enter the IP address / machine name of the computer
that you wish to make the white list settings for. Click on 'Get' and the dialog
box / various white lists TABS will be populated with the setting of that remote
machine.
Now you can make new settings or edit existing settings of the White List as
explained in the White List Section (Click for
further details). Once you have made the required settings,
click on on 'Apply' and the changes will be made on that remote computer.
Controlling Remotely the Sending of Offline Messages of the Client Computers

You can remotely control the sending of Offline Messages of client computers from the
USB CopyNotify! Server itself.
Note:
In case there is a firewall installed on the machine, the following ports will
need to be opened BOTH on the USB CopyNotify! Client and Server machines:-
Port 40007 for UDP
Port 5555 for UDP
Port 5553 for TCP
Right Click on USB CopyNotify! Server System Tray Icon and select 'Client
Settings \ Send Offline Messages'.
This will open the 'Send Offline Messages' Dialog Box.

In the Send Offline Message dialog, enter the IP address / machine name of the computer
that you wish to make the settings for. Click on 'Get Status' and the setting of that remote
machine for the 'Sending of Offline Messages' will be reflected.

Now you can make new settings or edit existing settings
for 'Send Offline Message(s)'. Once you have made the required settings,
click on on 'Apply' and the changes will be made on that remote computer.
Getting notifications of USB/Pen/Thumb Drive Activity [Click here for Main Help Topics]
On successful installation of the Client & Server Components of USB
CopyNotify!, the components will start automatically on Windows Startup and the
Icons will be seen in the SYSTEM TRAY.
As soon as there is any usage of Pen/Thumb Drives/USB Drives on any of the
machines on which the Client component has been installed, the Client component
will notify the Server Component of the same and the notification will be seen
as a BALLOON notification appearing out of Server Component Icon in the System
Tray.

History

Right Clicking on the Server Component Icon in the system tray invokes a
menu with allows the user to view a history of all notifications that have been
received by the Server Component since it last started.

Getting Notifications by Email

Notifications of USB Usage can also be forwarded to you via email. Right
Click on the Server Component Icon in the system tray & click on Settings menu
Item
This will invoke the Settings TAB as shown below

Click on Send Mail to enable the Email Alerts and fill all the required details
accordingly.

Enabling / Disabling Balloon Message

Right Click on the Server Component Icon in the system tray & click on
Settings menu Item
This will invoke the Settings TAB as shown below

Click on "Disable Balloon Message". This will ensure that the Balloon Message
that pops up on the Desktop every time a message notification is received will
be hidden.

Logging USB usage
Notifications to file

Notifications of USB usage which appear in the History Window are available only
until the Server is ON. Once the Server is shut down, this notification history
is lost. Hence when the Server starts up again, the previous notifications will
not be available. In case it is required to permanently SAVE ALL notifications
you can Enable the Log File feature of USB CopyNotify!
Right Click on the Server Component Icon in the system tray & click on Settings
menu Item
This will invoke the Settings TAB as shown below

Click on Enable Log and then select the location and file name of the log file.
Any notifications now received by the server will also be written into the log
file. The log file is a TXT file format file and each notification is saved as a
comma delimited record with the following format :-
Date, Time, Computer Name, IP Address, Category of Notification, Message

Setting Audio Alerts

An audio file can be played as soon as an alert is received.
Right Click on the Server Component Icon in the system tray & click on Settings
menu Item
This will invoke the Settings TAB as shown below

Click on "Play Sound for insert & remove USB Device Messages" and then select
the location and file name of the audio file to be played. This audio file will
be played automatically on receipt of any INSERT or REMOVE notification
messages.

Setting Filters

The alert filter allows you to decide which Alerts/Notifications you which to
receive as well as whether you wish to see the Alerts in the desktop pop-up, log
file or email.
Right Click on the Server Component Icon in the system tray & click on Settings
menu Item
This will invoke the Settings TAB as shown below

Clicking on "Apply Filters" will invoke a dialog box as show below

By clicking on the appropriate check boxes you can decide which alerts you
wish to receive as well as chose whether that particular alert is to be seen in
the Log File, Desktop - Balloon and/or Email.
Disallowing Configuration Changes on Client computers

You can disallow the user from directly making any configuration changes to USB
CopyNotify!
Right Click on the Server Component Icon in the system tray & click on Settings
menu Item
This will invoke the Settings TAB as shown below

Click on 'Disallow Client Side Configuration' & then Click on Apply Settings.
With this, no configuration changes will be allowed to be directly made at the
client computers. It is to be noted that this will applied across all computers.
Purchase of USB CopyNotify! Licenses

It should be noted that when you download a copy of USB CopyNotify!
initially, it will by default only function for 30 days.
In order to increase make it fully operational across the number of computers
you wish to monitor, you will need to purchase a license key for the appropriate
number of computers to be monitored.
This license can be purchased online

This license key will be emailed to you and would need to be entered in the
registration section of USB CopyNotify! Server.
You can also purchase licenses by right clicking on the Server Component Icon in
the system tray & click on Purchase Menu Item.

Right Clicking on the Server Component Icon in the system tray invokes a menu
with allows the user to enter the license key that would register and
activate USB CopyNotify! to monitor the specified number of computers on the
network.
After clicking on Register, the following dialog box will be displayed.

The user can now enter the required license key.
